The Barden Bellas are back, and this time, the bad-pitches of A capella are packing more mashups and medleys than all the Glee season finales combined.

Seriously, if you aren’t a fan of dance-pop radio hits and synthy-sweet vocals, accompanied by sometimes confusing choreography and lots and lots of sequins, then “Pitch Perfect 2” might just drive you insane. But if you are into all that literal jazz, then get ready for the movie-musical experience of a lifetime.

The plot is simple enough: in the three years that have passed since their win at the National Championships, the Bellas have become a household name, and so successful that they book a gig performing for the President on his birthday. But things get weird when Fat Amy (played by Rebel Wilson) accidentally flashes her lady bits during the performance, leaving the Bellas disgraced, and suspended from performing at the collegiate level. In order to win back their glory, the girls must beat-out reigning world champs, Das Sound Machine of Germany, and become the first-ever Americans to win the World Championships of A capella.

And yeah, that’s pretty much it for narrative.

But the movie isn’t about the story, so what does it matter that it has about as much plot as a game of golf? “Pitch Perfect 2” is about the singing, the sparkly costumes, and the sisterhood at stake. Which, all in all, is a whole lot of fun.

But it’s not just the jazzy numbers that make it a good movie—it’s also chock-full of laugh-out-loud jokes and gags. Most come in the form of spitfire, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it lines, and there’s also some solid physical comedy from Fat Amy and Bumper (played by Adam DeVine), as well as a couple beartrap surprises.

What tickled me the most, however, wasn’t the million jokes, or the impressive theatrics. It was the enormous cast of secondary characters. While much of the non-a Capella action was centered on Anna Kendrick’s character, Becca Mitchell, the real stars where the peripheral Bellas—specifically Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), Stacie (Alexis Knapp), and my personal favorite, Cynthia (Ester Dean)—along with some hugely random but totally fantastic celebrity appearances. I won’t spoil the surprises, but I will say you can go into the theatre expecting a visit from at least one D-O-DOUBLE-G, the current leader of the free world, and some of your favorite cheese-heads. And no matter how you feel about pop jamz, you can’t deny the novelty of all those cameos.

“Pitch Perfect 2” isn’t exactly oscar bait, but it isn’t an empty chick-flick either. It’s funny, it’s entertaining, and I’m already counting down the days until the sing-along version is released. If you’re up for a fun movie-going experience, this movie is well worth a trip to the cinema—but good luck getting those medleys out of your head.
