With a loss to Bell Multicultural High School in the semifinals of the DCIAA playoffs, the Wilson girls varsity basketball team ended last year’s season feeling as if they fell short of expectations. However, this loss came without their star point guard, Tara Cousins, who was sidelined for the second half of the 2018 season with a torn meniscus.

Returning to the lineup this season, Cousins will be a key component of the offense. “I have to facilitate for everybody, run our offense, get people open, and make everything easier for my teammates,” Cousins said. Her offensive prowess isn’t limited to being the floor general. “If we need some points, I can get that for my team,” she explained.

Over the offseason, Cousins worked with a personal trainer, looking to extend her shooting range and take her game to the next level. “I want to be DCIAA Player of the Year. I also want to make All-Met, which is harder, but I think I can do it,” Cousins said.
Cousins will also bring some upperclassman leadership back to the team. Senior Aleisha Hopkins added, “[Cousins] is a great floor general and she is very good at telling people where to go without being condescending.”

The Lady Tigers are hoping to avenge their premature playoff loss. “Our goals are definitely to win the DCIAA championship, hopefully get to the finals of states, and prove we can compete with private-school teams,” Cousins said. With Cousins leading the charge, the team’s goals are certainly achievable.
