Fall Sports Season Previews



Cross Country: Wilson’s runners are looking to bring home a DCIAA championships for the sixth year in a row. Coming off an intense summer training regimen, Wilson XC is in tip top shape. A busy September is on the way with their first meets scheduled for the 8th and 12th. The team is also excited to return to the Disney High School Classic which is planned for the second weekend of October. Fort Dupont is hosting the DCIAA Championship on October 24 and the DCSAA Championship on November 7.

Varsity Football: After a disappointing end to to the season last year, the team is revamped and ready to go. Quarterback Steve Williams reported that the team is, “coming along better than expected, but there is still room to improve.” Williams and the team are looking forward to a great year. The season is underway with two games already this week and the first DCIAA game is September 11 at Phelps. Homecoming is scheduled for October 25 against Anacostia and playoffs are set to start November 14.      

Boys Varsity Soccer: Coming off of an exciting season last year with only three loses, boys varsity soccer only hopes to improve. Goalkeeper Simon Birnstad says, “Tommy Cerasola is for sure a brilliant player with a very high soccer IQ that will thrive anywhere we need him on the field”  Tommy will surely help Wilson as the soccer team tries to crack the DMV top 10 ranking again this year. A big home game against Maret is scheduled for September 3.

Varsity Volleyball: The girls volleyball team looks to add to their impressive 16 consecutive DCIAA Championships, but lost 9 players from last year’s team. They have a gruelling schedule of around 30 games in just a three month period. Both JV and varsity teams have begun practice and varsity has a home game against Coolidge on August 29. The girls hope to find their groove before the 5th annual Tiger Paws Tournament on October 17 and the DCIAA tournament, which begins on October 28.

Girls Varsity Soccer: With tryouts completed, the girl’s soccer team has a quick start as they are scheduled to play home games against nearby rivals GDS on September 1 and St. John’s College High School on September 8. DCIAA Playoffs are scheduled for the end of October. Following DCIAA, is the coveted DCSAA championship in early November, during which the girls will be looking to avenge their earlier than expected exit last year.

Varsity Field Hockey: With a record breaking number of girls at tryouts, the field hockey team is adding new faces to their growing program. They posted a record of zero wins, two ties, and eight losses last year. Although there were some close games, the girls have been working hard to improve their game with summer camps and captains’ practices during the summer. The team will try to beat their arch rival School Without Walls on September 10. As the school year starts it will be interesting to see how the hard work and dedication reflects on the field.
